Lead Clinical Perfusionist, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Naoise was elected on to the Executive Committee of the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists in 2020.
Naoise is experienced in a wide range of perfusion techniques but is particularly interested in complex aortic surgery and ECLS strategy and delivery. He also has a keen interest in training and education having presented at various ECMO meetings and delivered in-house training programmes on topics such as IABP, cell salvage, and ECLS. His current role as Clinical Governance Lead allows him to be involved with several service improvement projects with the goal of advancing and refining all aspects of perfusion practice at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
Naoise graduated from UCD, Dublin with a BSc in Physiology in 2010 followed by an MSc in Space Physiology & Health at King’s College London in 2011. He then joined the Royal Brompton Hospital, London as a trainee perfusionist before gaining accreditation in 2014. During his time at the Brompton, Naoise completed his requirements for an MSc in Perfusion and gained experience in all aspects of adult and paediatric perfusion, and ECLS. He was appointed Perfusion Lead for ECMO in 2016 where he developed protocols, and designed and customised the retrieval equipment with the goal of reducing the time period from patient referral to the initiation of ECMO. Two years later he became Specialist Lead for Paediatric and Neonatal Perfusion focusing on reducing the priming volume of circuits and the development of a new circuit for paediatric lung lavage. In 2019, Naoise joined the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he is now the Lead Perfusionist for Clinical Governance.
